Having won the TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award, their reputation for delivering high-quality, local culinary experiences is exceptional.
The original Yorkshire Appetite website was built using the Ionos Pagebuilder. While it served its purpose initially, the business had outgrown the platform. The team faced several critical challenges:
Rising Costs: The platform was becoming increasingly expensive without providing additional value.
Limited Functionality: The page builder offered very little flexibility for a user-friendly eCommerce experience or a robust booking system.
Management Friction: Updating content was cumbersome, making it difficult for the team to keep their tour details and partnership information current.
The goal was to build a site that looked as professional as their tours felt, while lowering overheads and giving the team full control over their content.
I built the new Yorkshire Appetite website using WordPress, providing a much more robust and scalable foundation.
Key elements of the build included:
Elementor Integration: To solve the issue of content management, I used Elementor to create a bespoke but simple-to-edit interface. This allows the team to easily update tour content, prices, and partner information.
Functional eCommerce: By moving away from a basic page builder, I was able to implement a more intuitive user journey for bookings and gift vouchers, essential for a high-volume tourism business.
Technical SEO Foundations: Built with a clean architecture and technical SEO best practices to ensure the brand maintains visibility in a competitive local market.
This project was a collaborative effort to ensure the site’s aesthetics and message matched the quality of the tours:
Content: Site content was provided by Nikki Wallace
Branding & Logo: The visual identity and logo were created by Sophie Hutchinson (https://www.sophjh.co.uk/)
Video and Photography: Shot by Andy Hopkinson (https://fnsphotography.com/)
Web Design, Development & Technical SEO: Delivered by myself Craig Pickles (YorkshireTechy).
The new site provides a seamless experience for food lovers looking to book a tour. By migrating to a self-hosted WordPress environment, we eliminated the restrictive monthly fees of the previous builder while gaining infinitely more functionality.
The Yorkshire Appetite team now has a website that allows them to easily manage a diverse range of content, from regional award announcements to seasonal blog posts like “Christmas Presents for Foodies” and “Bake Off influence on Yorkshire baking”.
Key Outcomes:
Reduced Admin Time: Content updates are now fast and intuitive.
Scalable Platform: Whether adding a new tour location or launching a new event, the site is ready to grow.
Professional Branding: The site now reflects the premium, 5-star quality of the tours themselves
