YorkshireTechy case study

Santander Billpay

BillPay was the UK’s first online banking general bill payment system, originally created for Girobank and later acquired by Santander.

At its peak, the platform processed over £1bn in a single week, making it one of the most heavily used online payment systems in the country.

What I Delivered

I worked on BillPay for more than 15 years, from the original design and build through to managing the project as Product Owner on the supplier side. Over that time, I helped evolve the platform, support millions of transactions, and maintain the high levels of security and reliability required by a major UK bank.

Long‑term Product Ownership

Across 15 years, my responsibilities included:
  • Managing the client relationship with Santander
  • Overseeing the roadmap, enhancements and maintenance
  • Coordinating with multiple internal and external teams
  • Ensuring the platform remained secure, stable and compliant

Team Leadership

I managed a dedicated team of up to eight specialists, including:
  • Software developers
  • Network and security engineers
  • Investigation and fraud operatives
  • Technical support staff
I ran:
  • Daily development stand‑ups
  • Weekly client project review calls
  • Monthly face‑to‑face meetings for retrospectives and planning

Cross‑department Collaboration

The project required close coordination across several Santander teams:
  • Marketing & Management (Bootle, Liverpool & London)
  • Infrastructure (Milton Keynes)
  • Product Team (Spain)
This ensured the platform aligned with business goals, compliance requirements and customer needs.

Technical Delivery & Documentation

I produced and maintained:
  • Technical documentation
  • System flow diagrams
  • Financial and transaction reports
  • Security and fraud investigation reports
I also managed ad‑hoc development requests, system improvements and ongoing maintenance.

Security & Fraud Handling

Given the nature of the platform, I regularly handled elevated security issues, fraud investigations and high‑priority incidents, ensuring the system remained safe and trusted.

Tools & Processes

To support collaboration and delivery, I implemented:
  • Slack for team communication
  • Zoho PM for project management
  • A hybrid Waterfall/Agile (Scrum) approach depending on project phase

Impact

BillPay became a critical part of Santander’s online banking infrastructure, supporting millions of customers and processing huge transaction volumes. The platform’s reliability, security and performance were essential to its success. In 2021, Santander brought all payment services in‑house, and BillPay was formally decommissioned after nearly two decades of service.
