Never let your web designer own your domain.

A quick warning for any business owner

I see this mistake constantly and it always ends the same way… stress, delays, unexpected costs, and sometimes a full-on fight just to get back what should have been yours from day one.

Your domain name is the digital equivalent of the deeds to your business. If you don’t own it, you don’t control your website, your emails, or your online identity. Simple as that.

My stance is firm: YOU should always own and control your own domain.

Not your web designer. Not your agency. Not your “mate who set it up years ago”. You.

And I find that the easiest, safest place to keep it? Cloudflare.

Cloudflare gives you:

  • The cheapest .co.uk domains anywhere
  • World‑class DNS performance
  • Built‑in security used by a huge percentage of the internet
  • A clean, simple dashboard you control
  • The ability to give your designer access without handing over ownership

This isn’t an advert for cloudflare, I don’t earn a penny if you sign up with them. I’m simply a long‑time customer who’s used dozens of domain registrars over the years, and Cloudflare is the one that has consistently shined, so I am happy to recommend them 😀

Why this matters:

I’ve had clients come to me after:

  • Waiting weeks for a previous supplier to release a domain
  • Being charged ridiculous “transfer fees”
  • Being outright refused access to their own domain
  • Losing their domain completely because someone else registered it
  • Facing the threat of legal action just to get their own name back

No business owner should ever be put in that position.

When you own the domain yourself, you have instant access. If something breaks, if you change supplier, if you need help, you’re not stuck waiting for someone who’s disappeared, gone quiet, or simply can’t be bothered.

The bigger picture: DNS matters more than people realise

Your DNS is the digital wiring behind your website and email. If it’s slow, messy, or sitting on cheap hosting nameservers, you’ll could feel it:

  • Slow website connections
  • Emails bouncing or landing in spam
  • Security gaps
  • Random outages
  • Google ranking issues

I’ve cleaned up many DNS setups and the difference in stability and performance is huge.

If you’re not sure who owns your domain or where your DNS lives, that’s a massive red flag.

I help local businesses get their digital foundations sorted properly:

  • Domain ownership checks
  • DNS cleanups
  • Migration to Cloudflare or other quality registrars
  • Plain‑English explanations
  • No long contracts, no faff, no jargon

You keep the keys. I make sure everything behind the scenes is watertight.

If you want me to check your setup, drop me a message and I’ll take a look.
